shimmering pale light
leaks through the surface
catching my attention
as if by surprise

I look up towards a sky
that reminds me
of nothing
so much as your eyes

I exhale
for what else can you do
underwater?

drifting down as darkness
encloses my mind

a deep breath
as my head breaks
the surface of the water

air hits me harder
than a thousand broken promises

the cold of it
chewing on the salt in my skin
