confusion!

I don't know how many of you are familiar at all with the expression "pretty please with cherries on top" but I was just sort of thinking about how it doesn't really make sense at all. I mean, we'd use it to ask for bloody everything, so it was odd. How can you have a "pretty please" anyway? Is pretty acting as an adjective or adverb?
