what makes you smile?
Sep. 15th, 2006 09:56 pmIt's days like today that I remember exactly why I like to work retail.
So many people thanking you for making their day/week/etc. just for doing your job. And you're more than happy to do it, of course, for all the kind smiles and genuine compliments. Working in retail and being genuinely good at it is the most rewarding career experience, IMO.
Randomly, I guy who had been in university with me (before I dropped) came to the store today. He told me he was sure I'd be greatly successful in life because I was so helpful and kind and cheerful... and a bunch of other nice things that really made me blush. Just for helping him hunt down one simple little CD. So I had to figure it out from the clues "Ring" and "Annie Lennox", but that's a lot more than most people give me...
And to head in a totally different direction. I had a good, long talk with one of my WoW friends that I've known basically since I started playing. And he just... listened. He let me rant on about everything that's been bothering me and that's been dragging me down in life. At the end, instead of giving any of those things importance by asking for more details (which, admittedly, I've never been big on sharing) he simply asked me "and what makes you smile?" I don't know if he did it on purpose but that question really made me think, as well as making me feel quite a bit better. I gave him three answers. But I could probably add a number more to it, now.
What have I learned from this? Yes, things are tough. Life can treat you like shit. But why focus on that when there are things that can make you smile? Take it to heart, lovelies. (You especially, Jer. Oh, and you too, Shiz. I wish I could find a way to demonstrate to you as Aph managed to do for me. But it was a really right words at the right moment thing. Both of you could really use that. You both get down way too much.)
