gnutmeg: (brekky)
I know when most people think of french toast, they think of sweetened bread to be eaten with icing sugar or syrup. Not me, though. When I was little, whenever we had "french toast", it was this savoury concoction. Imagine my surprise when I learned that it wasn't the norm. (In fact, I've yet to meet anyone else who prepares it this way!)

Savoury French Toast

1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp onion soup mix (sometimes I add more, 'cause I like it extra onion-y)
3-4 slices white bread

Mix the first three together, dip the bread in and fry it up like you would with normal french toast. We always served it with bacon or sausages when I was little. These days, I just eat it by itself. I also enjoy the leftovers cold, or having it with supper or lunch.

This just goes to prove that there's lots of ways to think about old favourites! For me it was going sweet with my french toast that made me think about how many things you could mess around with in the kitchen.
