(no subject)

So I'm in the shower this morning and I notice some writing on my shower and it says something about having a maximum capacity of 9.5 litres per minute. And then, being myself, I stopped to figure out about how much this is. So, assuming I take a ten minute shower every day. And, to make it simple, we'll round that 9.5 up to 10. So 10 minutes at 10 litres per minute equals 100 litres of water in one shower.

To give some of you an idea how much water that is, think of milk cartons. Milk is sold in 2L cartons. It would take 50 cartons of milk to equal the amount of water used in one shower. Think about that.

And, I don't know about the rest of you, but we drink a lot of milk in my house. So we go through about 4 cartons a week. So, to get through that 50l of milk, it would take us about 12.5 weeks. That's 3 months. 1/4 of a year.

That's a hell of a lot of liquid. And to think. That much water is wasted on me every day just to be clean when children around the world are dying from diseases contracted by bad water. I hate North American culture. Agreed, there is less disease, but is it really necessary to shower each and every day? Imagine. There are 30 000 000 people in Canada. If every one had a shower this morning, that 3 000 000 000 litres of clean, drinkable water gone. Yes, it does get recycled and cleaned in the plants and such, but think about how wasteful it is. We take water for granted.

<EDIT> For the Americans, 4 litres = 1 gallon. </EDIT>

And, on a much lighter note~
1. Reply to this post if you want me to tell you how cool you are!

2. Watch my journal over the next few days for a post just about you and why I think you rock my socks.

3. Post these instructions in your journal and give your friends a much needed dose of love and adoration!

Wow, that is a lot of water. I kind of wonder why we don't preserve more water and send it overseas where people can't get clean water and wait in lines for drops to come off a copper pipe. It makes me want to do something XD 0.o Thanks for the liter-gallon conversion ^.-

Tell me how cool I am! XXD ^^;

*nods* North Americans are just to self-centered, as a culture, to help. I mean, it costs about $2000 to build a well with safe and clean drinking water in a village over there. So why aren't there more?

[identity profile] ex-shifted309.livejournal.com 2004-11-30 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
O_o@water amount.

Cheer me up. Tell me how uncool you think I am.

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
I know. And think. All of Canada's population is less than that of some of America's bigger cities...

*luffluff*

and that is a lot of water. you always have such interesting things to think about.

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
^_~

My brain, it is scattered. I tend to think about everything.

Bringing good water to some third world countries is actually more expensive that wasting all the water that we do waste. That's also something to think about, isn't it?

This is kinda funny, but I was also thinking water related stuff yesterday because I saw a board while I was on the bus that said we should consume less water.

And probably, you use a lot less water when showering everyday... something around 50-70 liters. I'm kinda guessing, because I know showers take a lot less water thatn baths do, and a bath is around 100-150 liters.

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was estimating using the shower and maximum capacity. Even at 50-70 litres, it's still an impressive number. (And I just noticed, I spell litres the French way. ^^;;)

And I think that's really disgusting that it would cost so much. But the cost for not doing it is human lives, so which way are we better, you know? It does go along with the thoughts of what a money-centric world we live in, these days. It's possible to help, yet we don't because of loss of coin.

coin > life = very wrong

[identity profile] tmcado.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, water is one of the main sources for health, therefore is understable that greedy governments don't want to give it for free. Sure, this decission does cost lives, but governments only look after their own nations and what they can gain from others. It's all about politics, which implies, in a lot of cases, being selfish.

[identity profile] amaya-kazuki.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting....ugh all that water gone just to be clean. Yeah america does waste alot of water....In the summer time california has a limit on how much water they can use. I shall cut down on my shower time after reading this.....
i know you don't know much about me, but i would still like to hear your thoughts on my coolness ^_^

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
Water is one of our most precious resources. Only 10% of all the water in the world is actually clean and drinkable. (The rest is either salt water or too poluted.) As the world continues to be industrialized, I worry that number will shrink.

^^

[identity profile] talillama.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
lol Okay I want to see you saying how cool I am XD

And, that is a lot of water. Especially when I take 20 minute showers when I have them o.o; But we don't have a shower now, we only have a bath, so ... I think that that's less wasteful since you use a set amount of water and it lasts ... lots longer. Uh ... yeah, that sentence didn't make sense, but you know what I'm saying.

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to be in the water for a long time, then yes baths are less wasteful. However, from what I understand if you're showering 15 minutes or less, it's less water than a tub.

[identity profile] kagome-angel.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
How cool am I?! XD

God, that's... that's a lot of water. And to think, people in third-world countries... CHILDREN, for chrissakes, do not have clean water. They have to go and bathe in the rivers and such. Do we really know how clean those are? ;_;

We should feel lucky that we have clean water with which to take a shower.

But, again, that is a LOT of water. *Eyes boggle*

[identity profile] lirimaer.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
Children die every day from diseases contracted from drinking unclean water. It only costs about $2000 to dig a clean well in a village. They don't have the money, but we do, over here. Yet we do nothing.

Know what else is scary? It takes about 10L (2.5 gallons) of water every time you flush a toilet.

[identity profile] mihogoeth.livejournal.com 2004-12-01 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that is alot of wasted water. I mainly just take baths, but I don't take one everyday though. We go through alot of milk at my house too. That is sad about those children in the other countries. I was wondering if you could tell me how cool I am... *is now shy* Thanks
