planning an escape

Maybe my sense of geography is way off, but why does it take 15+ hours to fly to El Salvador when it only takes like 8ish to fly to England?

On a completely related note, anyone have recommendations for cheap airlines/websites in North America? I've looked at travelocity.ca and expedia.ca so far. Man, I miss easyjet and ryanair!
